It's been a record-setting season for the OPRF girls lacrosse team and there's still a handful of games to be played.
The Huskies, who began the week 13-1, have broken or tied several team records including the number of total goals on the season. As of last week, the team had accumulated a total of 218 goals in 14 games, more than surpassing its 2006 record of 183 - an accomplishment that took 23 games. The Huskies' goals-per-game average has doubled from last season to 16. They've dished out more assists than in '06 with over 100 and counting.
"We have put a huge focus this year on doing the little things right .... cutting to the ball every time, catching and passing with the outside hand, throwing in a fake before every shot, constantly communicating on defense to the point of annoyance," said OPRF head coach Katie Simok. "We don't run a fancy offense, we run simple mini plays.
"The girls are so comfortable with each other and the plays at this point that they don't even have to call them. They just see the opportunity and take it. Mastering the fundamentals is conducive to taking the step with our program."
OPRF finished fifth last season in a field of 32 teams. The sport has grown to showcase 39 teams this season.
Not only has the team been gelling this season, but its individual players are making their way into the record books as well. Early last week, senior Nicole Cordero scored 10 goals during a 16-6 victory over Barrington, breaking Bryce Buchowicz's seven-goal mark in a single game set against Fenwick in '06. In a game against Fremd, junior Olivia Thompson tied Buchowicz's draw-control record of six, set in '05. Thompson is likely to break Buchowicz's single season goal record of 63. As of this writing, the midfielder was leading the team with 60 goals.
"I can't name just one person that has impressed me on our team," said Simok, whose team is leading the state in most goals per game (16.8), as well as least goals allowed per game (4.3). "All of my returning varsity players are twice as good as they were last year. They worked hard in the off-season and it has definitely showed."
Senior Julia Moy tallied five assists in a game against Lyons Township - where her father is the head coach - to tie Kit Hamilton's single-game record.
On April 28, OPRF pummeled St. Ignatius 21-1 with a balanced offensive attack. Twelve different players scored for the Huskies, including Thompson who led with five goals. Cordero added four goals, while Moy and Hannah Dorian chipped in two apiece. Elina Berzins, Hannah Decker, Audrey Heffernan, Kelly Hickey, Jasmine McBroom, Rose Morrissy, Chiara Santiago and Rachel Shannon each scored a goal apiece in the lopsided win.
The Huskies host Hinsdale Central for Senior Day at the Lake St. field on Saturday (2 p.m.). The Red Devils knocked OPRF out of the state quarterfinals last season.
The Huskies then travel to Benedict University to take on Naperville Central on Monday, before closing out the regular season at Evanston Township on May 14.
The state playoffs begin May 16th and the state championship will be held at Northwestern University on Lakeside Field on May 28th.
